English-speaking BJJ classes in Lisbon

Looking for BJJ or no-gi grappling classes taught in English in Lisbon? Here is what to expect at Grapplers Collective — schedule, vibe, and how to start.

Lisbon has become an expat city. Tech, design, remote work — half the room on any given Tuesday is from somewhere else. So it makes sense that one of the most common questions we get is simply: are your classes in English? Yes. Here is what that actually means.

How English-friendly is the room?

  • Instruction is in English by default. Cues, corrections, all of it.
  • The instructor also speaks Portuguese, Ukrainian, and Russian. If your English is shaky, you can still ask questions.
  • Most regulars speak English on the mat. Lisbon's grappling scene is international.

Why this matters for newcomers

Grappling is a contact sport with a lot of nuance, and a language barrier can make a beginner extra anxious. When the instruction is in your language, you can focus on the problem in front of you, not on translating in your head. That is the whole point of training in English: it gets out of your way.

Who tends to train here

  • Expats living in Lisbon long-term (tech, design, finance, creative).
  • Digital nomads here for 1–6 months.
  • Travelling competitors dropping in for a session or two.
  • Locals who prefer an international room.

Practical bits

  • Schedule: Tuesday, Thursday, Friday at 19:00.

FAQ

Will I be the only English-speaker in the room?

Almost certainly not. Most regulars speak English. On a typical evening you will hear several languages around the mat.

What if I only speak basic English?

That works. The instructor is multilingual, and most grappling concepts are taught visually and through doing — not through long verbal explanations.

Are there Portuguese classes too?

Instruction is in English, but the instructor can switch to Portuguese for individual questions. We do not run separate Portuguese-only classes.
