Your first BJJ class in Lisbon: what actually happens
A walk-through of your first no-gi grappling class at Grapplers Collective Lisbon — from arrival to the warm-down. Honest, friendly, no surprises.
Most people are nervous before their first grappling class. They worry about getting hurt, looking stupid, or being matched with someone who treats sparring like a fight. That is reasonable. This article walks you through exactly what happens when you train with us — so you can stop worrying and just show up.
Before you arrive
Message us on WhatsApp the day before, or even the morning of. Tell us it is your first time. We will confirm the schedule, the address, and answer any questions about clothes or experience.
Wear shorts and a t-shirt or rash guard (see what to wear). Trim your nails. Bring water.
When you arrive
The gym is at R. de Campolide 165. Arrive 10 minutes before 19:00. Someone will meet you, show you the changing rooms, and walk you onto the mat. You will pay €10 in cash or by card if it is a drop-in. If you decide later that you want a monthly plan, we can sort that on your second visit — no rush.
The first 10 minutes: warm-up
We start with movement that looks a bit like grappling: shrimping, bridging, simple stand-ups. Nothing extreme. The goal is to wake up the muscles you are about to use, not to test your fitness. If something is uncomfortable, scale it down or sit out a round — nobody will look at you sideways.
The middle: training games
This is the part that surprises most newcomers. We do not line everyone up and demonstrate a technique. Instead, we set up a training game with rules — for example, one person tries to keep their back off the mat while the other tries to flatten them, for 60-second rounds.
The rules of the game force you to discover useful movement on your own. Your partner is a real, resisting human, but the constraints make the problem small and safe. You will not be drowning. You will be solving a clear puzzle.
The end: free rolls (optional)
Some sessions finish with a few rounds of free sparring. On your first day you do not have to spar. If you do, your partner will be chosen carefully — usually a more experienced person who treats it as a teaching round, not a competition. You can also tap whenever you want, for any reason. Tap means stop. That is the whole rule.
Afterwards
Shower at the gym if you want. Most people hang around for a few minutes talking. You will leave a bit tired, probably a bit sore the next day, and usually surprised that the hour went by faster than expected. Most beginners come back.
Train with us in Campolide
Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday at 19:00. Drop-ins from €10. Beginners welcome — no kimono required.
FAQ
Will I be sparring on my first day?
Only if you want to. Live training games are part of every class, but free sparring is optional on day one. Most beginners try a soft round or two by the end of their first week.
What if I am very out of shape?
You can scale every round to your level. The training games are designed so a beginner and an experienced grappler can work together without either being bored.
Do I need to speak Portuguese?
No. Classes are taught in English. Lisbon is a city full of expats and visitors, and our room reflects that.
