What to wear to your first BJJ class in Lisbon
A short, practical guide to what to wear for your first BJJ or no-gi grappling class in Lisbon. No kimono needed — here is what works.
We train no-gi grappling in Lisbon, so you do not need a kimono or any martial-arts uniform. The dress code is closer to a gym class than a traditional dojo. This page is the short answer.
The short answer
- Shorts (board shorts or grappling shorts) or athletic leggings — no zips or pockets.
- A rash guard, a fitted t-shirt, or a snug athletic top.
- Flip-flops or sandals to walk to and from the mat (you train barefoot).
- A small towel and a water bottle.
What to avoid
- Zips, buttons, or hard pockets. They scrape skin under pressure.
- Jewellery. Rings, necklaces, earrings — leave them in your bag. Wedding rings included.
- Long fingernails and toenails. A 60-second trim before class saves your partner.
- Strong perfume, cologne, or aftershave. The room is close.
- Anything you do not want to sweat in. You will.
Hygiene matters more than gear
Grappling is a close-contact sport. Come clean, with trimmed nails, and the rest takes care of itself. If you have a small cut or skin issue, cover it with a plaster or tape before training.
What we provide
The mat is sanitised before and after every session. The gym has changing rooms and showers, so you can come straight from work. Just bring a change of clothes if you plan to head somewhere after.
Where and when
We train in Campolide, Lisbon, on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday at 19:00. Drop-ins start at €10. Message us on WhatsApp before your first class and we will make sure someone is at the door to meet you.

FAQ
Do I need a gi (kimono)?
No. We train no-gi grappling — shorts and a rash guard or t-shirt are enough.
Can I train in jeans?
No. Jeans have zips, buttons, and rivets that injure your training partner. Athletic shorts or leggings only.
Are there changing rooms and showers?
Yes. The gym has both, so you can come straight from work and shower after class.
